| dc.description | A portrait of a past nurse trainee of Warrnambool Hospital, Sister Lyla Stewart (Eliza Ferguson). This is a military portrait taken by the Military Forces of the Commonwealth in 1916. Lyla served at the 2nd A.G.H. in France during WW1. Sister Lyla Stewart's great niece Ellena Stewart Biggs provided more details of Sister Stewart's life. Born, Eliza Ferguson on September 7th 1886 at Keilambete, Victoria (near Terang). Went to school at Keilambete East State School. Nurse Training at Warrnambool and Hamilton Hospitals. Embarked on war service on the 21st of August 1915 on the ship named 'Kyarra'. Served in the Australian Army Nursing Service, stationed at Mena House Hospital, Egypt, 1916 and 14th Stationary Hospital, France, 1917-1918. Sister Lyla returned to Australia on the ship 'Wandilla' on the 18th May, 1919. Upon her return she married Bill Thompson and lived in East Brighton. Sister Lyla became a pacifist as a result of her war service. She was a women of strong opinions and a Labour Party supporter of many years. Lyla passed away on the 18th March 1972 aged 86. | en |
