Photographed are nurses L>R K. Johnstone, J. Blain and M. Neale. These nurses were infected with the Spanish Influenza while on duty in the Isolation Ward treating patients. This area is part of the Isolation Unit and is fenced off from the remainder of the Hospital grounds as a precaution. Their meals were brought and left on this fence for the isolated patients to collect while outside. Otherwise a member of the kitchen staff would bring the patient and staff meals to the main ward door and ring a bell to let the staff know to collect them. The nursing staff were assigned to this Ward for 6 weeks at a time. They were not allowed to leave this ward at all during this time and slept on the veranda floor.en
