Thank you note for a donation to the Hospital Appeal fundraiser event, the 'Ugly Man of the South' competition. The thank you not is address to W.J. Wines - Motorcycles ridden around Friendly's Oval. The event is mentioned in the Hospital's Annual Report of 1949 under Hospital Appeal heading - ... successful Hospital Appeal. Organised by the Hospital Appeal Committee under the Chairmanship of Mr E. H. Kew, the appeal took the form of an Ugly Man Competition, the four competitors being Messrs. Arthur Luttrell, Alan Turner, John Hagley and John Beckwith. A highlight of the appeal was the excellent Market Day held on Saturday, the 30th April, when the area adjacent to the Town Hall was packed with enthusiastic buyers and sellers from early morning until evening. During the conduct of the appeal many valuable friends were made both in the city and the country, while the excellent financial result - over £7000 - exceeded all expectations. To Mr. Kew, the four "Ugly Men" and their Committees, our Hospital Secretary Mr. Lindsay, and all who assisted in any way, we tender our grateful thanks.en
