2016 update of the principles of best practice: Wound infection in clinical practice consensus document

Abstract

AIM Principles of best practice: Wound Infection in clinical practice. An International consensus document was first published in 2008. The International Wound Infection Institute (IWII) met in May 2015 to review the 2008 consensus document and discuss key criteria required for updating due to changes in knowledge or practice. METHOD A formal literature review of the last eleven years regarding wound infection, biofilm, wound cleansing, topical and systemic management of wound infection and wound infection identification and diagnostics was conducted. Following this review of the literature an international on-line Delphi process was conducted. Sixteen leading wound experts were invited to participate. RESULTS /DISCUSSION In light of new research and evidence, this consensus document was updated by: zzAdding and updating terms and definitions zzInclusion of the impact of comorbidities on wound healing and infection zzInclusion of Biofilm zzRevision of the wound infection continuum was zzInclusion of fungi in chronic wounds zzRecommendations on topical and systemic management for wound infections zzRecommendations on wound culturing techniques zzUpdate of diagnostics for wound infection CONCLUSION Due to advancements in understanding chronic wound infections since the expert panel met in 2007 the Wound Infection in clinical practice document required updating due to its continued popularity. The 2016 expert panel document will provide clinicians with another easy to use and understand document regarding wound infection.
